Meet GX2, Univision Job Share Team


There are moments in life when the stars align and someone you instantly connect with crosses your path.

I picked up the phone one-day last spring and the voice on the other end of the receiver sprang alive, her Spanish accent sang-sung along full of energy and enthusiasm as we talked very rapidly about job sharing. We had shared experiences of how much we depended on and enjoyed working with our partners, how we learned from one another and were better together, how every job share team we knew were top performers, and why, oh why on earth did more industries not seem to have any idea what job sharing was or how to do it successfully?

The last thing Gaby Proctor said to me was, “I support you.  Completely.  Whatever you need.”

Months later we would finally meet face-to-face, and I would meet her partner Gabriela Mendez. Their interview was scheduled for my birthday. It wasn’t a huge surprise that Gabriela P’s birthday happened to be the day before — It made sense.

The last thing Gabriela Proctor said to me was, “I support you.  Completely.  Whatever you need.”

The week before our interview, I received an email signed “GX2” from the job share team; it was then I knew the duo rocked the job share world and the business world. A sign of successful job shares is when stakeholders consider them interchangeable at all times—start a project with one, finish with the other —and it makes no difference. Gabriela Proctor and Gabriela Mendez are proud to say, “there is always a Gaby there” for their clients, ready to create marketing solutions and take their businesses to the next level.

GX2 knew there were Univision job sharers in other markets but they weren’t sure quite how to make it happen, what the perception of their co-workers, clients, and managers would be, or how it would affect their income. The pair were friends at work and outside of work and intuitively felt they could work together successfully.

According to Proctor, “Our lives needed to be more balanced, Mendez had just had her second baby and I was pregnant with my third when we realized it was time. We had talked about it for two to three years but never had the right moment to jump into it.”

In order to job share, GX2 had to give up 40% of their list which meant 40% of their income, in order to work three days a week with one shared day. It was a big decision, but they had three key elements to success: the right personality and work-style for job sharing, the right partner, and a supportive manager in Andy Olivera who believed in the job share leaders.

Olivera says of working with the job share team, “These ladies are the best I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.”

The two quickly made up the lost income and more. Not only are they top producers as Senior Account Managers for Univision Communications, they also motivate one another to be their personal best. After they each had their last child, they started running and now run triathlons together!
