I have to step back and process that for a moment. Doesn’t feel like any other year, does it? Full disclosure—some days I felt like pulling the covers over my head and never coming out.
But something happened…
Something hard but necessary. I was forced to confront myself—really reach out to my diverse community, take a backseat to listen and learn, and decide what I was going to do to be a force for good.
Something else happened too…I wasn’t the only one.
Before the election, I was hopeful that we’d see advances in parental leave, affordable healthcare, and gender equity policies, knowing that changes in these areas open up flexible work opportunities—including job sharing—for everyone.
The small and large acts of courage and kindness I witnessed all around me became my life preserver. Companies didn’t wait for Congress. Innovators like Accenture, Deloitte, 3M, Patagonia, Salesforce, and American Express led the way knowing that family-friendly policies and diverse workplaces make for better business outcomes. Businesses to support flexible work, returners, and women-friendly workplaces like Fairygodboss, FlexJobs, The Mom Project, Power to Fly, Werk, Austin-based Pro Mama, Apres Group, iRelaunch, and Reboot Accel are gaining traction. And women? Well, women marched, ran for office—25,000 reached out to Emily’s List—and bravely spoke up to share their personal stories of #MeToo. Men listened and companies responded.
Time is up and a new day is on the horizon!
